We did a backup of the default Vista mail program. When we tried to restore it to a newly formatted system, we get the following error: unable to open your databases. An updated version of Windows mail has been successfully installed....". We restored the files first, then opened the mail for the first time after. It asked us what do do with files already in place and we chose overwrite. We tried a second time with skipping files if they were there, the same error. Any suggestions to recover his mail as it was originally?

Hi, Perhaps something like this can help:
1. Click on Start.
2. In the search programs and files field (or Run) copy and paste the default location of the Windows Live
Mail message store found below:
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Mail
3. Look for Mail.MSMessageStore file name and delete it (right click, delete).
Note: The Mail.MSMessageStore does have a back-up folder and will work to recover your messages but may not be able to view some recently received messages. If you have web based e-mail, Windows Mail should sync with the mail server so they are made available again.
This tip is originally for windows live mail but Windows vista mail works a very similar way. Here is where I found it:

The tests I have perfomed with the windows mail feature were always with the same version as source and target on virtual machines. I hope that will do the trick

I will try those ideas. For what it is worth, the original computer was vista sp2 along with the clean install is vista sp2, I wonder whay they have differecrt versions of the mail program.
One more question, should I choose overwrite any duplicate files while restoring mail?

One more question, should I choose overwrite any duplicate files while restoring mail?
This is what I would do
