[SOLVED] how did 126GB become 680GB?

I exported a user's profile, and added some additional folders.
as total the program identified and copied 126GB.
I attached an internal disk for speed of copying.

Now, when I'm trying to restore, it identifies the same profile as over 680GB to copy back, with copying speeds going as low as 1MB/s when copying lots of very small files.

While exporting took less than 2 hours, the importing has been going on for over 8 hours now, and is not close to being finished! mad

How did this happen?
How can I avoid it in the future?
Can I do anything now to fix it?
